Statistics:  
  • Approx. 38 million homes in the U.S. contain lead; 25 million are hazardous
  • Almost two-thirds of those with hazardous conditions are middle to upper-income families.
  • Of the 28 million hazardous conditions, 5.6 million have children under the age of six living inside.
  • Painting or remodeling a home built before 1978 can disturb lead paint and endanger young children.
  • Choose a contractor, from our list of certified contractors below, who has experience working with lead paint.
  • Federal law requires contractors to give you a brochure, Protect Your Family From Lead in Your Home, before starting jobs that involve lead paint.
Sources of Lead:
  • Most Common: Paint made before 1978 - paint chips sometimes in the form of nearly invisible dust is found inside most homes built before 1978.
  • Soil around roads
  • Drinking water from older plumbing that used lead pipes or lead solder. (Run water 15 to 30 seconds before drinking)
  • Old painted toys and furniture

EPA "Regions" may include states that have developed Lead Certification Programs, in which case, that state's List of Certified Lead Professionals should be used.
